George C
Washington, DC
I am a senior at Georgetown University majoring in International Culture and Politics at the School of Foreign Service (I basically am married to my books and computer). I spent the last year abroad in Melbourne, Australia and Alicante, Spain. In the former, I spent some time with an indigenous sporting community, Rumbalara, which promotes social interaction between Aborigines and White Australia. My experience with these youth motivated me to get more involved in national service programs. I have also studied global social movements, international relations theory, economics, diplomacy and communication. I am looking to enter law school in the future.

  • Equal Justice Works: Lawyers in Service
    07/15/2008 02:39:33 PM EST
Last week, I had the privilege of speaking with Mr. Cole McMahon, Senior Program Manager for AmeriCorps at Equal Justice Works, headquartered in Washington, D.C.  Equal Justice Works (EJW) is a unique program in the national service sphere, since it works directly with law schools, law firms and nonprofit organizations to promote public interest work and address community needs while also helping lawyers address their own financial concerns.  Mr. McMahon enthusiastically explained his organization's work and its importance, opening my eyes up to an entirely new area of public service.

  • Visiting City Year DC on U Street
    07/03/2008 11:26:50 AM EST
Endings are only beginnings.   After seeing City Year Washington DC’s graduation a couple of weeks ago, I approached their Program Director, Andrea Shaye (herself an AmeriCorps alum from the District), for a site visit in order to learn about their program and accomplishments.  CYDC’s offices are in transition, as they are moving to a new location, but the photographs, smiling faces and feeling of community will persist until the doors close for the last time on U Street.  Moreover, it is evident that the important work ServeNext is pursuing will only increase City Year DC’s capabilities and accomplishments.
  • JumpStart-ing Georgetown University
    06/25/2008 09:09:52 PM EST
The first thing that strikes you about Kate Murphy’s [Site Manager for JumpStart Georgetown University (JSGU)] office is the staggering number of photographs capturing the smiling faces of disadvantaged Washington, D.C. preschoolers along with their Georgetown University mentors and friends.  Immediately, you know this is a place where community is paramount.
  • Congratulations City Year DC
    06/22/2008 11:37:08 AM EST
Friday evening, I had the privilege of attending the 2007-2008 City Year Washington D.C.’s graduation ceremony, the culmination of 75 Corps member’s year of service.  Dressed in their distinctive red jackets, khaki pants (some still splattered with paint) and Timberland boots, City Year DC, filling the Calvary Baptist Church near Chinatown, celebrated over 130,000 hours of service and making a difference in the lives of over 9,000 needy children in the region.  It was a celebration not only of an ending, but of achievements and a new beginning for these alumni in the serve of idealism.
