The need for more public service appears more urgent than ever. As co-founder of the U.S. Public Service Academy, Chris Myers Asch, puts it, “It is absolutely necessary that Americans understand that we cannot neglect the public sector, especially after Hurricane Katrina.” And that is where the Academy comes in.

The Huffington Post reports that MusicianCorps—piloted by the Music National Service Initiative (MNSi)—dedicated to public schools and underserved communities will sharpen critical skills a child needs to succeed in the creative economy and “solve our greatest future challenges.”
Jonah Goldberg, an LA Times columnist, has taken a bold stand against Barack Obama’s speech which called all Americans to serve their country or community through programs like AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps. He claims that Obama will violate the 13th Amendment which states that slavery and involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, shall not exist within the United States.
If there’s something in it for you, go for it. That’s what the average American thinks as the word “capitalism” is stamped on the nation’s forehead. It is interesting to see how much more Americans are gung-ho for something when an incentive exists. That is why reciprocity stands as the winning ticket to success…it is exactly what America goes for.
Although national service has increased through membership in programs like AmeriCorps and through political support, so has the need.
