I'm serving as a ServeNext intern this summer. I am currently a M.A. candidate at University of Denver where I am studying international development, environmental policy, and gender policy discourse. I found my love for service as a community leader through being an active member of my sorority.

- An Experience of a Lifetime

Why join AmeriCorps? Is there real merit in what AmeriCorps does? Will you as a volunteer receive any benefit from this program? I am sure those are just a few questions that you are asking yourself if you are considering joining AmeriCorps. Deciding to volunteer for a year is a difficult choice to make; especially when we do not feel compelled to serve our community. However in my experiences when I have decided to take a leap of faith, whether it was volunteering for my community or deciding to study abroad, I have always had a positive experience that is irreplaceable. I believe AmeriCorps volunteers upon completion of their service receive an experience of a lifetime. - Blue and Red States of America

At this point in American History, we are taking part in a monumental election year. We have survived a long and drawn out primary process. Now, we have our two presumptive nominees Barack Obama and John McCain. Both candidates are trying to bridge the gap between both political parties and foster bipartisanship. However the truth of the matter is that Americans still identify themselves as either blue or red. We no longer identify ourselves as just Americans, who support the concept “the betterment of our nation through bipartisanship”. - A World Without War

A world without war (at least minimal war) is a strange and foreign concept to most of us. I think internally we all secretly wish for it. But the sad reality is we live in an era where unjust wars are seem to be popping up all over this place. Why do we (human beings) go to war with one another? Is it because war/fighting is part of the inherent nature of human beings? Is it because we want to protect our collective identity and land? Is it because we believe the other side (the aggressor) is committing an immoral act? - Ugh...Volunteerism

The word volunteerism always raises many eyebrows. Either people (the few) are very receptive or others (the many) are reluctant to volunteer. In my experiences as a sorority member, it was always difficult to get my sisters and other community members involved in a community service project, despite volunteerism being a core value to our sorority. I do enjoy volunteering however I have to admit that I have volunteered far less within the last year due to my first year in grad school. I am not trying to make excuses but it is difficult to set aside time to volunteer, which is a problem many Americans face.
