In order for national service to be significantly expanded in the upcoming years, such expansion needs to be integrated as a priority in public policy, fully accounted for in our federal fiscal budget, and spearheaded by our future president in inspiring Americans everywhere, especially our youth in middle and high school. The one clear thing which the next president must do is to expand the ranks and impact of national service programs drastically. Every year, ¾ of the applicants are turned away by the Peace Corps, just under 9/10 of Teach for America applicants are rejected and 14,000 disadvantaged youth are turned away from YouthBuild while 1000 applying communities are denied YouthBuild projects. These rough statistics are evidence that the most important action which our next president needs to take in national service expansion is a reprioritization of budget expenses.
