An Experience of a Lifetime

Jun 20, 2008 Posted by Chandra Palmer

Why join AmeriCorps? Is there real merit in what AmeriCorps does? Will you as a volunteer receive any benefit from this program? I am sure those are just a few questions that you are asking yourself if you are considering joining AmeriCorps. Deciding to volunteer for a year is a difficult choice to make; especially when we do not feel compelled to serve our community. However in my experiences when I have decided to take a leap of faith, whether it was volunteering for my community or deciding to study abroad, I have always had a positive experience that is irreplaceable. I believe AmeriCorps volunteers upon completion of their service receive an experience of a lifetime.

AmeriCorps volunteers obtain invaluable professional development skills needed for public service, a strong sense of accomplishment through helping those, who are disadvantaged and disfranchised. According to a new longitudinal study (the study analyzed the impact of AmeriCorps on its volunteers) released by National Service shows AmeriCorps alumni are more likely to engaged in their community, more satisfied with their lives eight years later than those who opted not to participate in the program, and they are more likely to go into the career field of public service. The study also indicates that the alumni feel a strong connection to their community and they are able to identify and understand the underlying problems of their community. The study concludes that AmeriCorps alumni from racial/ethnic groups and disadvantaged circumstances are drastically more likely to go into the public service sector.

What does this all mean? This study proves the merit of the AmeriCorps programs and National Service. If AmeriCorps alumni feel they have received an enormous amount of benefits from their service that means we should be allowing more people to be involved in the National Service. If we allow more to people to volunteer, we will see a sharp increase social entrepreneurship and investment in public service and non-profit sectors.
