At this point in American History, we are taking part in a monumental election year. We have survived a long and drawn out primary process. Now, we have our two presumptive nominees Barack Obama and John McCain. Both candidates are trying to bridge the gap between both political parties and foster bipartisanship. However the truth of the matter is that Americans still identify themselves as either blue or red. We no longer identify ourselves as just Americans, who support the concept “the betterment of our nation through bipartisanship”.
My political discussions with friends, family, colleagues, and follow students in the last few years have constantly consisted of each them identifies themselves firstly as a Republican or a Democrat. Once that has been put out on the table the respective parties begin to tear into the faults and wrong doings of each other parties and they glaze over the important issues at hand. We are so focused on the idea of which political party is the right party, we let pressing issues, like the mortgage crisis, the expansion of the National Service, and of course, the issue of ever rising prices of energy resources, go on the back burner.
How can we solve this problem of blue vs. red? No matter who is elected in November, we must begin to bridge that gap in order to reunite us as the United States of America. One solution to the problem is to facilitate cooperation among Americans (despite their race, social class, political association, and religious beliefs) through service and volunteerism. I believe this can be developed through expanding the National Service. I call for the next president to expand the National Service via the three following points:
1) He should push Congress to consider and to pass the National Service Act of 2009.
2) He should educate the citizenry on the available resources of the National Service
3) He should call the citizenry to action to serve their country through national and community service organizations.
